New Year's 2008

Only a couple more days now for 2007 to have outlived it's time and to bring in the New Year to take it's place. Do you make resolutions??? I don't, too much pressure to start a new year off with by placing demands on me to do certain things. Instead, I just make promises to myself to try and do better at the things that I wasn't so great at in the previous year and continue to do the things I enjoyed and maybe do even better. I like to take on new challenges, so I promise to challenge myself to try new things and see how I do. It doesn't matter if it doesn't work, it's more important that I try... I have one funny little superstition about New Year, so I decided to search the net and see what else is out there. Here is an abbreviated version of what I found.

**Kissing at midnight** - We kiss those dearest to us at midnight not only to share a moment of celebration with our favourite people, but also to ensure those affections and ties will continue throughout the year....

**Stocking up** - The new year must not be seen in with bare cupboards.....

**Paying off bills** - The new year should not be begun with the household in debt.....

**First Footing** ( my personal favourite superstition) The first person to enter your home after the stroke of midnight will influence the year you're about to have. Ideally, he should be dark haired, tall and good-looking, and it would be even better if he came bearing small gifts.....

**Nothing goes out** - Nothing, absolutely nothing, not even garbage - is to leave the house on the first day of the year. If you've presents to deliver on New Year's, leave them in the car overnight....

**Letting the Old Year out** - At midnight, all the doors of a house must be opened to let the old year escape unimpeded....

**Loud noise** - Make as much noise as possible at midnight. You're not just celebrating: you're scaring away evil spirits, so do it well.

**Born on January 1st** - Babies born on this day will always have luck on their side.

There are more on Snopes.com. and the text of the above, if you'd like to read the full article. Here's wishing you all a great start to the New Year and that it continues throughout the year. Stay safe if you go out to parties or other events. Take care of each other, don't let someone drive if you can see that they are in no shape to do so. Send them home in a taxi, it's safer for them and everyone they might have come in contact with. All in all, have a great time whatever you do.

Merry Maubles

Here's a box of Merry Maubles in various stages of being done.
And below they are all finished. Aren't they cute. Not because I made them, because they have such great character. They are hanging on the metallic christmas tree I showed you a few posts ago and look very nice greeting visitors at the front door. After the holidays are over and everything is packed away until next year, the Merry Maubles will be available for purchase on my regular website.
I'm also putting on my thinking cap and coming up with some ideas for ornaments of my own, so stay tuned...I am currently renewing some of my webpages, so I'll post again when that is done.

Things that make you grin !!

Just before "the big day" I had to get a dragon made for a customer. You know how you get really busy, anxious and any other adjective you can think of to describe that "have to get this done in time" feeling??? and you're tired and just want to stop but you can't, because a time limit is the key element. Well, that happened while working on this dragon. I was getting tired and wanted to go to bed but just had to work on his claws so the glue could dry well overnight. I got busy and attached some of the claws and put the clamps on. I got up, went to the door and turned to flick off the light. When I looked back at the dragon, I just burst out laughing. I hope he never comes to life and comes looking for me to get even.....isn't this just to funny..

Now that the holidays are winding down, I'm getting back to my work table. I am going to focus mostly on christmas dolls I think, other than what the shops here want. I see more dragons in my future... Today I'm busy working on another of Kat Lee's elves. I hope to have the whole workshop done for next year, it's going to make a great display..

Boxing Day

Have you ever wondered where the term "Boxing Day" came from, or have you just viewed it as another day off with pay... All I ever saw were people tearing off to Boxing Day sales and kept thinking, what on earth more could they want, we just had Christmas. I've never gone to Boxing Day sales. I inadvertently walked into one at a store one time and one time only when I went for one small item. I was dumbfounded when I stepped in and saw this mad rush of people grabbing at everything in sight and for a moment just stood there is stunned silence. I know more than one person who sets out in the morning and they don't come home until supper time, and completely loaded down with packages, and all I kept thinking was, "WHY". I asked the question years ago about Boxing Day, because nobody seemed to know why they got a day off from work, so I found out.

Well, in days gone by, this was a very important day for working people. Although Christmas day takes over as the gift giving day, Boxing Day was actually an offering of gratitude to working people. I've taken this excerpt from answers.com as I wanted to make sure to give the correct information. All the links below will take you to more information should you like to read further.
**************************************************************************
There are disparate theories as to the origins of the term. The more common stories include:
It was the day when people would give a present or Christmas box to those who had worked for them throughout the year. This is still done in Britain for postmen and paper-boys - though now the 'box' is usually given before Christmas, not after.

In feudal times, Christmas was a reason for a gathering of extended families. All the serfs would gather their families in the manor of their lord, which made it easier for the lord of the estate to hand out annual stipends to the serfs. After all the Christmas parties on 26 December, the lord of the estate would give practical goods such as cloth, grains, and tools to the serfs who lived on his land. Each family would get a box full of such goods the day after Christmas. Under this explanation, there was nothing voluntary about this transaction; the lord of the manor was obliged to supply these goods. Because of the boxes being given out, the day was called Boxing Day.

In England many years ago, it was common practice for the servants to carry boxes to their employers when they arrived for their day's work on the day after Christmas. Their employers would then put coins in the boxes as special end-of-year gifts. This can be compared with the modern day concept of Christmas bonuses. The servants carried boxes for the coins, hence the name Boxing Day.

In churches, it was traditional to open the church's donation box on Christmas Day, and the money in the donation box was to be distributed to the poorer or lower class citizens on the next day. In this case, the "box" in "Boxing Day" comes from that lockbox in which the donations were left.

Because the staff had to work on such an important day as Christmas by serving the master of the house and their family, they were given the following day off. As servants were kept away from their own families to work on a traditional religious holiday and were not able to celebrate Christmas Dinner, the customary benefit was to "box" up the leftover food from Christmas Day and send it away with the servants and their families. (Similarly, as the servants had the 26th off, the owners of the manor may have had to serve themselves pre-prepared, boxed food for that one day.) Hence the "boxing" of food became "Boxing Day".

*************************************************
And this from kidsturncentral

The holiday Boxing Day may get it's name from the 19th century English custom of giving Christmas boxes containing food or money to family servants and suppliers, the day after Christmas.

Another possibility is Boxing Day may have come from the opening of church poor boxes that day.

The most basic understanding is that gifts, or boxes, were given to those who were less fortunate, on the day after Christmas, while gifts to those with equal standing were given on Christmas day.

It is also known as, the Feast of St. Stephen, or St. Stephen's Day - the first Christian martyr.

It is most often celebrated in Australia, Britain, New Zealand, and Canada on December 26.
Although it is a statutory holiday in these countries it is not celebrated as such. Most countries host Boxing Day sales on that day which have little or nothing to do with the holiday at all.

Christmas Eve

This is what a Canadian West Coast Christmas looks like. The paper said the other day that if we're hoping for a white Christmas, well we've only had 5 of those in the last 52 years....so pffft, there goes my idea of making snow angels and chucking snow balls at unsuspecting passersby.....darn !!!!! ;o) but there is a eenie weenie chance of a bit of snow on Boxing day.. I'll take what I can get !!

Tonight is the night (except in Oz where they already did this part...) where those kids need to get tucked in so the jolly man can do his work.No peeking either. We always have our celebrations Christmas Eve which is traditional for my European upbringing. My mother tried to save it till morning, but I got myself so wound up I made myself sick, so the evening before was always the best option.

Season's Greetings one and all. Wishing you all the very best the season has to offer. May the New Year be safe, happy and peaceful. Thank you for all the great comments you've left throughout the year, they have all been so appreciated. I am aiming for a creative year ahead and wish all you creative sorts, the very same year. Fill it full of wonderful works of art from those busy hands.....

They say a wreath represents a circle of friends...and aren't we all just that in our blogging world.

Christmas 6

I finished off my pressies for the ladies that own the shops I have my dolls in. The green one is staying here with us, because sadly as I was taking the "magic tape" off, so carefully, the green came off in a few places. Poorly disguqised by green metallic paint, but she's on our tree and looks quite happy to be there. This a design by Michelle Munzone, called Merry Maubles, and I still have 10 more to finish, all that's left to is add the tassels and hangers. They will be done the way that Michelle designed them. I saw these glittery baubles in the dollar store and of course went back for more, because they are just so pretty. A bit of dressing up with Michelle's design, and they make a wonderful keepsake.

We took the neighbours dog for a walk into Sidney last night and along the way we passed this little house. About the size of summer cottage, or less. It was decked out to compete with the big guys and looked so pretty I just had to take a picture. It's the tiniest house but certainly doesn't look that way with a few strings of lights and wreath on the door.. A beautifully simple little house turned into a pretty picture.

Christmas 5

I mentioned in my post yesterday that I would talk about the boxes under the christmas tree. It's actually very simple and green. A few years ago someone shared with me that they use boxes under the tree to put their gifts in. I took it one step further and I use the boxes to put away christmas decorations at the end of the season. Some of these I've painted, and the others are bought. I have more to paint, 3 of them with Elves on them, and others, but time eludes me..... These two boxes I bought, just love cat themes. These three I painted.

The other thing I think is my absolute favourite thing is Nutcrackers. Here are some of my collection. There mini, midsize and a tallish one. Nutcrackers originated in Europe so our house was never without them. I have a couple of patterns for nutcracker dolls to make. One by my friend Michelle Munzone, the other is a 4 foot one by Becky Holloway. Maybe next year?? ;o).... If you're interested in reading more about Nutcrackers, here is a good site that gives the history of them... Nutcrackers

Christmas 4

A couple of weeks ago or so, I read on Hankering For Yarn , that there was a contest for Holiday Blogs being hosted by Supergranny Rules. Well I'm happy to say that I entered my blog and won a prize for it. Now that was a great surprize to wake up to on this very blustery morning... Thank you so much Gayla and to your judges who spent the time looking at each entry and deciding on mine for one of the prizes. Being a fairly new blogger, this means a lot to me...

Christmas 3

What a great day. Very quiet, uneventful and restful for my first day of holidays. I spent the day putting up the tree and decorations. I put on some christmas movies and just took my time enjoying it all. It's always interesting how we/I forget some of the things that I've packed away from the year before. The older decorations I remember, but the new ones, well. So, my tree is up and looking resplendant all decked out in the pretties. Growing up with European traditions was wonderful because it gave me a different way of doing things compared to everyone else. One of the traditions is to always decorate the tree with birds as birds are thought to bring good luck, so each year I add more (one can never have to much good luck). This red bird is a modern day addition to my collection. The scarlet coloured bird is a glass ornament. It is as light as air and has to be handled ever so carefully, and they add so much to my tree.
Another traditional thing was to decorate with hand blown glass ornaments. So absolutely fragile, but so pretty. I usually take a please don't touch approach to those ornaments, just because they are so fragile. This first one is to most people not so fancy, but it's one of the few I have left from my childhood. The purple one is a new one from last year. There is a shop here called the Christmas Store, and it is run by a German family and it's open all year. I could spend days in there and still not see it all. There are floors and floors of christmas decorations representing all parts of the world. It's truly a place to be for those of you who love this season all year. Here is the tree all finished. Below the tree are some boxes to show you and another tradition if you will, but I will save that for the next post....so until then.

Christmas 1

We went for a little walk after supper to start collecting pictures of some of the christmas decorations around the neighbourhood. While I was taking some pictures it occured to me, that everyone, and I mean everyone is going wild with these blow up christmas displays. I thought it might be fun to show you some of those just around a couple of blocks here. I couldn't get pictures of all of them because some of them don't light up well and you have to see them up close and personal to really enjoy them...
So here are a few to start off with. I will take more pictures on the weekend and post again... Wish it would snow soon, that's always so much more fun to go looking at the lights when the snow is fallling.. However I live in hopes. The forecast is calling for snow on Christmas Day.....YES !!!! I will go and through snowballs at the neighbours. Who says you can't be a kid your whole life.....
This first one has a big beautiful polar bear in the background with Santa's all around.

Here's one with some snowmen singing carols, while Rudolph tries to extricate Santa from a chimney 2 sizes to small...

Looks like Santa has found alternate forms of transportation..

And who could forget the Grinch at Christmas. Is he trying to join in the caroling or thinking of something naughty.... Or could it be that he's making darn sure that no one misbehaves....

I hope if you're fortunate enough to live in areas where people are able to decorate and share their love of the season, that you'll be able to go around and admire the work they've put into their decorations. Christmas means different things to different people. For me, it's the spirit of the season...the bright colours, the music, the movies (my collection grows bigger each year), the opportunity to enjoy treats for the New Year brings the dreaded angst about how much we shouldn't have eaten.
It also, sadly, means that there are those out there who wish the holidays would just be over with because it brings back memories for them they would just as soon forget. If you know someone like that, why not just make a little time for them and try to make some happy memories for them. Sometimes all it takes is a little kindness to help them make it through.
Well, those are my pictures for tonight. I hope you enjoy them and I will have more next time....

An Award

My very good friend Serena has sent me this award, and has given quite a lot to live up to calling me "multi-talented. Serena herself is an extremely accomplished artist. Click on over to her blog to see what I mean. I did a little research into this award, and discovered that this is a very special award because it recognizes the bloggers who work hard to keep their blogs interesting and creative and most importantly their own.

Following is an excerpt from the creator of the "Be The Blog" award.
"Earlier this year I was tagged with the blogging tip meme in which the tip I offered was “Be the Blog“. That phrase stuck with me because I think that really sums up what a successful blogger does. And what I mean by successful is that they make it their own, stay with it, are interactive with their readers, and just plain have fun."

Click here to visit the creator of this award and if you have someone in mind that you feel deserves to be recognized for their blog and the work that's gone into it, send them to the site to choose the colour of award they would like to post to their blog.

I would like to now award Kate Iredale the "Be The Blog" award. Kate has a great blog, full of inspiration and interesting reading. She does some wonderful photography, graphic work and I look forward to the newest articles she's posted. She has what I like to think of as a "quiet place" to pull up to the computer with a cuppa in hand and see what's new. Click "here". to read all about Kate.... So Kate, please head over to Me and My Drum and choose your well deserved award...
