Since the beginning of the Tour de France, glued to the tv. Then the 2012 London Olympics on the heels of that, glued. A complete time suck but who cares. Maybe sometimes we need these things to slow us down for a while from our own crazy world and who doesn’t need a good dose of young athletic energy to give us all a boost off our chairs and sofa’s and send us hurling out the door in our go fast clothes.
Now that it’s all over, I feel like I’ve stepped out of the Truman show. Now what are we supposed to do…??? Oh yeah, we had our crazy busy lives before all that didn’t we…. I do feel the need to post a bit of a pro and con about the Olympics though but I’ll be brief so as not tarnish the glow that has me enveloped just now.
On the con side: Do we really need both indoor and outdoor volley ball. I don’t think so. While I think a lot of things are entertaining, do I think they are an Olympic sport, nope. How do taekwondo, badminton, table tennis, BMX, sailing, and I’ll be brave and say it….equestrian, qualify as Olympic and there are others. I found the coverage of the events was so messed up, every channel, every day, volleyball….really???? It went on and on, snippets at best of some of the events, if you looked away from the tv, to bad, that was your one chance to see that event.
Organizing committee, if you’re scanning the blog-a-sphere for feedback, listen up. The Olympics are to big and to many events. Cut back now on the number of events, it’s to much, and those young athletes who have trained so hard to be part of the experience are being cheated out of their 15 mins of fame because there’s no time for the tv coverage to show them all, give them a chance to change their focus to something else they can excel at, and there will be many options. And please eliminate the professionals from these events. They don’t deserve to be there, they have multimillion dollar incomes, they don’t need to take this moment away from those athletes who come here on their own dime with the support, hopefully of their respective sports committees or whomever. Don’t come to the Olympics and take this moment away from them. It’s insulting.
I’m done now and will give a huge PRO… Congratulations to all the athlete’s with so many stories, trials, tribulations, wins, losses, DQ’s, and tears of joy and sadness, entertained us for the past two weeks and the Tour de France cyclists before that. I commend you on your hard work and regardless of any win or loss, we were there with you. Britain did a superb job of both the opening and closing ceremonies. What a wonderful memory bubble for those athletes who poured so much of themselves into these past two weeks.
Now it’s done and and like Truman aptly stated, "And in case I don't see you... good afternoon, good evening, and good night," bows to his audience, and steps through the door and into the real world.
