The Origins of Black Friday

There is a misguided belief that it has something to do with slavery… Totally false as you can see by going to Snopes.com and checking out this article. The actual meaning of Black Friday is really just as simple as this,

“Black” refers to stores moving from the “red” to the “black,” back when accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit.

I found that information here, so if you’d like to learn more of the history of how Black Friday came to be, it’s quite interesting. Over time business owners realized it was a good opportunity to draw in throngs of customers and make some great sales.

Unfortunately today, it is so out of hand I’m embarrassed to be part of the human race. I’m sorry we’ve adopted it here in Canada, it’s just so crazy. This is not my idea of going shopping. Holy cow.

If you want to bring out the worst in people, just go to a shopping center and see for yourself. Watch the madness as people get trampled in the rush to get through the doors, watch those credit card balances max out, fights break out over some stupid thing they don’t really need. After that insanity subsides, what is left. Bills up the wazoo that will take you until next Black Friday to pay, if then.

I guess I just don’t get it.  At least I’m not alone in my thinking. I found this site and thought, thank goodness. A cooler head has prevailed. And as this person points out, you can get deals at local stores throughout the year and be wary of “those sale prices”. You may not really be getting the deal you think you are.  Your local businesses will give you deals for your continued patronage throughout  the year, and I think they need more help than the box stores after all. Our economy relies on our small business people to a great extent, so support them.

I’m not a party pooper really, but really and truly, who doesn’t like a good deal. Of course we do, but at this cost. I don’t like crowds at the best of times, and would never be caught up in this madness. For those who get a rush from going, I wish you well… keep safe, but for me, I’ll just stay away from all that and a very quiet and restful day not shopping. ;o)

  1. Could not agree more, Ro. We would not even venture on the roads on Black Friday let alone go shopping! Shop wisely throughout the year and ignore the madness. The supposed good deals are not that good.

  2. Hi Chrissie, It's so true. Just last night I was watching the news of fights breaking out again at Black Friday sales. It's obscene really, some innocent person trying to get a deal could end up getting caught in the cross fire. It's almost like madness takes over from sanity...
