Earth Day

This is Earth Day. It seems so silly to have to have a special day set aside for our Earth because we should all be aware of Mother Nature all year round? We live in such a fast pace, hectic world and we forget about the basics right in front of us. Do the majority of people just assume that the Earth will take care of itself just because for so long, it has. With all we do to it, it cannot sustain life forever. At some point, it will start to retaliate.

Perhaps that's what's happening now with all the bizarre weather patterns world wide. We've all seen it covered on the news, in the newspaper, general chatter amongst ourselves from people who have been to places on holiday, and some really weird weather happened. So this begs the question. Is it Global Warming, or is it Mother Nature purging herself. Whatever side of the argument you believe, the bottom line is that we all need to take responsibility. Whatever we can do as individuals will make some kind of difference, but in the end, things will be as it's meant to be.

We can make an impact by changing our patterns. Make sure you're not throwing out those old electronics etc. into the garbage, find a recycling depot in your area. Reduce the amount of garbage you throw out, pick up some of the canvas bags that are being promoted for groceries instead of using the plastic bags all the time. If you have to use plastic, take your excesses back to the store, most places have a recycling bin to return those bags.

I recently got a new car, finally. What I didn't know because I had that car for soooo long, is what they do with the old one. They want all these old cars off the road because of all the pollutants given off by those old cars, so they offer incentives. GMAC has a car heaven plan where they give you $750.00 off the new car price. For my car 6 months ago it was $1000.00, but now is reduced, but at least my DH still got something off for his old beast that he just got rid of. They don't just send it off to a car graveyard and forget about it. Who knew....not me. No, what they did was send it off to be stripped down. They drain all the fluids, then take the car apart and sell everything they can. The rest gets crushed and presumably sent off to be melted down and reused. Part of the proceeds of the selling of the old parts, went to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) and I got a tax receipt for that. GMAC, you did great.

Take a little time to think about how you can reduce, reuse and recycle today and everyday. We all want to keep our little piece of the planet healthy, so if we all do our part in our own areas, we can make a difference. I love my island here on the west coast of Canada and I would never want to move. It's like the bananna belt of Canada, but even our weather patterns have changed, but it's still a beautiful place to be. Lots of trees, wildlife and surrounded on 3 sides by water (we're on the peninsula)....I'll keep it.... Have a green day..........
